From the Superintendent
Walking around the backside of the high school last Thursday afternoon, I could hear the muffled energy of more than 600 students coming through the gym walls. I knew the annual spirit week assembly had started.
As is the tradition, each of the four grade level classes was standing in their traditional bleacher sections, cheering for their class and each other amongst a sea of class colors and decorations. Yes, it was loud, but it was a good kind of loud--that of positive energy, Ranger pride, and a sense of school-wide belonging that cannot be fully appreciated unless everyone is together in the same room. As I looked around, I noticed that staff members were enjoying themselves as much as the students, as they should; for their collective commitment to building positive classrooms and school culture, day in and day out, can be more easily observed in moments such as this.
Unless you are witnessing such an event, it is difficult to describe. Whether rooting for their classmates during the annual class tug-of-war and pie-eating contests, cheering on the Unified basketball team as they made baskets, watching in suspense during musical chairs, or sharing exuberantly in the ups and downs of the culminating relay race, the boisterous spirit activated during these 90 minutes could easily carry the school for the next 90 days.
Yes, we should be proud that our high school has been named #1 in Maine for five years in a row. Our schools have long been recognized for their academic, athletic, and arts accomplishments. But this all pales in comparison to something deeper, something that cannot be easily quantified. Having watched this group of high school students since they were at MIW, what is most impressive is their sense of character. They care for each other, take pride in their school, and are good people. As a parent, I know you can't ask for much more than that. Truly, beyond the cliche, I can say in sincerity that our young Rangers do, in fact, Lead the Way.
Regards,
Jeff Porter
