With our first two school days behind us, the year is off to a great start.

The MSAD 51 Safety & Security Committee studied a new approach to school safety rather than relying solely on lockdowns, which have been deemed inadequate by most law enforcement and government agencies when used as the only safety measure in schools or other public places. Last spring, the Board acted upon the Safety Committee's recommendation to move forward with ALICE  as the right fit for our district. ALICE is a multi-option approach for responding to a violent critical incident (VCI). The Safety Committee had sent several MSAD 51 administrators and teachers to be trained prior to its recommendation that the Board adopt ALICE.
On August 26 and 29-30, a team of law enforcement officers led by School Resource Officer Amie Owen provided ALICE training for more than 400 MSAD #51 faculty and staff from every school and department. The training consisted of classroom, online, and scenario-based learning, with many staff reporting that they felt empowered and more confident after learning this new approach. Each officer was partnered with a trained district employee to deliver the hands-on portion of the program in groups of 15-17 staff members, with 27 total staff groups completing ALICE training prior to the first day of school. Each staff member received approximately 4.5 hours of total training between all component modules of ALICE.
A parent informational meeting will be held on Thursday, September 22, 6:00PM @ the GCA to provide additional information about ALICE and the plan to roll out age-appropriate training for students in October. Mike Pierce of the Yarmouth PD for their efforts, along with school staff members who assisted: Don Gray (GHS); Jackie Hayes (GHS); Johnna Mulligan (GHS); Erin Pollock (GHS); Erica Sarapas (GHS); Peter Scott (GHS); Jason Lariviere (GMS 6-8); Peter Gillingham (GMS 6-8); Carol MacArthur (GMS 4-5); Cory Munsey (MIW); Mallory Orzechowski (MIW); Clara Evans (MIW); and Jeff Porter (District).

MSAD #51 Board of Directors Information

Effective August 22, unless otherwise noted, all meetings will take place at 6:00 pm in the Gyger Room at Greely High School.  For those of you unfamiliar with that room, the Gyger Room is where the Board met pre-COVID and can be accessed from the GHS parking lot (the side without the electronic sign).
